1973

1974
The Mclatchy brothers of "Perth Pullars" trained with the Portobello & Scottish Water Polo squad, One of them went on to win a bronze medal in the relay squad at the Montreal Olympics.
In 1974 the pool was losing approx 8,000 gallons per week and had to be topped up from the sea. As the price of oil for heating had more than trebled over the past year and it takes about 1,000 gallons per week to heat the pool, having to heat the extra cold water was costing to much, so the council decided that something had to be done.
At the end of the 1974 season the pool was emptied and the crack in the diving pit inspected. It was decided that a big repair on the diving pit would be impossible, so it was decided that the diving pit would be filled in and the diving stage taken away.
At this stage the local Library developed a structural fault, the library was demolished and the contractors used rubble as a base for filling in the hole. The Library was transferred to one of Lesser Halls.
The West wall and pondside cubicles (west) were taken down and the lorries with the rubble from the library ran right on to the pondside. After the rubble from the library was used the rest was filled up with red blaze, then 8 feet of concrete and 2 feet of smooth granite. Bringing the pool back to it's original depth of 3 feet at the shallow end and seven feet at the deep end.
mid 70's
The glass canopy which covered the area between the pond hall and the south seating area was removed due to disrepair in the mid 70's, bringing an end to midnight bathing, where the pool was open to the public from 10pm til 11.30pm (approx). The pool being light from floodlights hung on the glass canopy.
Late 70's
The wooden chute situated at the deep end had cracked & split in two, this too was taken away and replaced by new fibre glass chute a few years later in the early 80's
LATE 70'S/EARLY 1980'S
The backs on the south side seating area where removed leaving bare concrete & the old slatted wooden boards.
